Song Meaning Keep Your Head Up Tupac

Tupac’s songs and raps spoke a lot about the difficulties of African-American community. “Keep Ya Head Up” is one example of his influential songs in which he talks about the hardships of women and men in the black community and encourages them to stay strong and to lead their lives for their children. Single moms have to struggle to raise their kids in poverty, and they face many hardships. Tupac talks about women and says he would “be there” even if nobody would care for them (Shakur). In the song, he calls for the women who are abused by their men to not cry or give-up on themselves but to keep their heads up to face the hardships of life. He wonders why women are being hated, raped and abused while men all come from women and brought up from women (Shakur).

Through his music, Tupac conveys that women are to be respected, not abused. He not only argues that men should be truthful to women, protect them, and be there for them and their kids, but also warns about the consequences of not doing so. He explains that if men don’t take their responsibility towards women and their children, the new generation would likewise inherit the same culture, and would be worse and produce hateful adults who may continue the cycle of single parenting and further struggles that black families are experiencing. “And if we don’t, we’ll have a race of babies / That will hate the ladies, that make the babies.” (“Keep Ya Head up” 25-26)

Tupac however acknowledges in his lyrics that no matter how hard the African-American community tries to do the right things by supporting their families, it is difficult to overcome the obstacles they face daily.

Tupac’s personal life was full of struggle and controversies but the messages delivered through his raps are positive rather than provocative. Though it is difficult to overcome life’s struggles where the whole system is set-up with economic unfairness, racial inequalities, and a biased criminal justice system for the black community, Tupac through his songs, gives hope for people saying things are going to get easier and brighter someday. His songs does not preach radical views against the system that has oppressed them. Instead they teach about being respectful to women and children, about taking responsibilities, about practicing patience, loyalty and courage. They teach them to lead their life with their heads up in spite of all the grievances in front of them. Even 20 years after his death, Tupac is remembered for his raps and for the influence that he tried to create in the society with strong messages through his music.
